The Upper Valley has many wonderful resources for families. That is why many of us live here. What our community lacks, however, is a playground that is accessible all day, every day, and is safe for children of all ages. Six months ago a group of parents came together to find a way to address this need. We formed the Upper Valley Playground Committee and, with support from the town of Norwich and the Norwich Women's Club, developed an exciting plan.

We have developed the blueprint for the Norwich Community Playground, an open space that will offer all of our children a place to stretch their legs, expand their imaginations, and cement their friendships. It will also be a place for parents, grandparents, and caregivers to meet and talk.

We plan to revitalize the playground at the edge of Huntley Meadows. The play structures in place there today are dilapidated and extremely unsafe; as a result, the area sits idle. We will clear away the current structures to make room for a newly-designed facility, one that speaks to both the needs and the special attributes of the Upper Valley. As you can see from the design shown above, the Community Playground will be special for many reasons. Most importantly, it will be:

Centrally Located: The Huntley Meadows are within walking distance of Norwich center and are accessible to families throughout the Upper Valley. Because the Meadows are the site of many sporting events for school-aged children, the playground will be a convenient gathering place for families.

Safe: The new playground is designed to safely accommodate toddlers, older children, and children with special needs.

Accessible: While many families in the Upper Valley take advantage of trail systems and backyards, there is no central location that allows for preschool families to meet one another during school hours. (School playgrounds are only open to the public after 3:30.) The Norwich Community Playground will be available to families all day, every day.
